To assist with managing heightened emotions that often appear across our Junior competition (especially in the U20 boys space), the KBA has introduced a five minute cooling off period (aka sin-bin rule) effective this Season. This rule is already in play quite successfully in the senior competition and it is hoped by introducing it into the Junior space it will assist in diffusing some of the situations which arise after a technical foul is issued.

The interpretation of this rule is outlined below (taken from the Seniors competition) and the ruling will be trialled for the Winter 2021 season. If effective, it will be adopted into the KBAJ by-laws for Summer 21/22.

A “sin bin” policy will be implemented in all U20 games . Any player who refuses to abide by this policy will be asked to leave the stadium immediately

The rule will be implemented as follows:
  • The rule is applicable to a player who displays poor conduct or sportsmanship that warrants a technical foul. This includes dissent, arguing with the referee, inappropriate language etc  A technical foul will be called and administered in the usual way. The difference is that the player will leave the court and may not return to the game for five minutes of playing time.
  • The five minutes is a ‘fixed time’ during a playing period, regardless of whether a time out is called or not.
  • The five minutes does not include the half time break if it runs across the half
  • The player may be substituted if a sub is available.
  • The referee will note the time on the playing clock that the player leaves the court and instruct the scorer to observe the earliest time that the player may return to the court through a normal substitution.
  • If there is less than five minutes of game time left in the second half (before the game finishes) the player cannot return to the court.
