Established in 1979, Aberfeldie Jets Basketball Club is now 40 years old!
From humble beginnings with not enough kids to form two single sex teams,
we entered one mixed team and grew from there!
We now have over 1,000 children participating in 118 teams
in the Keilor Basketball Association's junior domestic competition and our Junior Jets skills development clinic for kids aged 6 - 11 years!
We welcome new players with or without experience from U10's through to U19's.

Basketball Coaches wanted for boys and girls teams – can you help our players grow at the grass roots level of domestic basketball?

Are you thinking about coaching your child's team or know someone who might be interested? Aberfeldie Jets Registrars are already busy behind the scenes looking at teams for the Winter Season starting in Term 2 season and we’ve identified we need more coaches. Some coaches won’t continue due to other commitments so we will need to replace them, additionally we will also be looking to create a few new teams in the younger age groups comprising of children from our Junior Jets clinics and wait list. Without coaches we can't get kids playing.

If you have a passion for helping teach basketball, enjoy working with kids and want to help our game continue to grow then volunteer to coach a team! Coaching is the lifeblood of any sporting club. Without people willing to give up their time to invest in helping young players and role modelling for young people, clubs don’t succeed. Just as the quality of a school teacher determines the success and future of their students, so to do coaches for basketball clubs. Aberfeldie Jets are happy to provide assistance and education, which includes a Coach induction session, discounted registration rate for coach’s children and support as needed from our Coaching Director. We also reimburse Coaches who attend Basketball Australia accredited coaching courses.

Aberfeldie Jets teams train one hour per week (teams are scheduled a regular one hour session Monday to Thursday between 4:00pm to 9:30pm depending on Coach and court availability) and play on Saturday’s in the Keilor Basketball Association Junior Domestic competition.

We are a welcoming and friendly club who have recently celebrated our 40 year anniversary, we want to see kids develop confidence, make friends and participate in the sport we love! Your involvement can help foster good sportsmanship, stronger, healthier, happier and safer community, enabling many children to be active.

We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people.  We abide by the Basketball Victoria Member Protection Bylaws which outline the screening process for people in our Club who volunteer (committee members, coaches and team managers). In accepting a volunteer role, you are agreeing to supply a current WWCC (unless you are underage, recognised as a teacher or in the police force) and must complete a member protection statutory declaration.

Basketball court shortages in the Moonee Valley municipality

The Aberfeldie Jets are a growing and vital ingredient in our local community. We have been bringing together children and their parents, helping kids gain confidence, be a part of a team, have fun and play basketball for 40 years now, aiming to do our best to shape and support our local community.

However as remarkable as we are, our club does not have a home. We have 118 teams playing, 5 classes of weekly skills sessions and a long waiting list. Aberfeldie Jets do our best to support all our members, but it is increasingly hard to do so when we have no home courts or Club rooms. Our Club uses eight local venues to train at and our Association uses 22 courts across 11 venues each Saturday to play on. Our families are forced to drive all over northern and western Melbourne because we don’t have enough courts in Moonee Valley.  This is difficult, costly and unfair on our families. For example, families with two or more children can be forced to be in two places at once, or drive long distances to give their children access to basketball games.  Public transport to these venues isn’t workable.

Our children are being turned away from our game because we don’t have a highball stadium in Moonee Valley.  It’s become urgent for Council to take action. We don’t have enough courts for our children to play the game they love.  We are one of the largest junior basketball clubs in Australia, in addition to the 1,000 plus players we have involved, we also have 200 plus children on a waiting list because there aren’t enough courts for them.  Because we don’t have enough courts, our association is forced to put a cap on our entire junior competition, restricting the number of children who can play.  Is this a good outcome for our kids … No!  A new stadium will help us remove this restriction and give all our children what they want – a basketball home to have fun, build their confidence, make new friends, learn what it’s like to be a good team mate and … play basketball.

We are in desperate need of a local indoor basketball facility. The Moonee Valley City Council do not have any highball (multi sport) stadiums in our municipality for sports like ours to use. We desperately need a 6 court stadium so that our kids can play the sports they love in our municipality instead of travelling to other municipality to utilise their facilities. Moonee Valley City Council kicked off the Quinn Grove project in early 2019 and are gathering information from people who have an interest in the precinct. They've been surveying the community and also have a community consultation group happening. We will update this info when we know more.

Aberfeldie Jets inaugural Indigenous Round
At Aberfeldie Jets, we are passionate about Reconciliation.

On Sunday 21 July 2019 in conjunction with The Long Walk and Keilor Basketball Association we held our inaugural Indigenous Round.

Understanding and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous people is what Reconciliation is all about and we believe every Australian should play a part. Our event showcased The Little Long Walk, a performance by The Indigenous Hip Hop Project, Australian Native ingredient Cake sale, Indigenous face-painting and a showcase game of young local Indigenous basketball players who played a game wearing singlets with artwork designed by Aberfeldie Jets U12 player and proud Juru, Kaanju, Wokka Wokka and Torres Strait Islander girl Jada Ross.  The Keilor Thunder Big V Championship Men and Women also wore Indigenous themed uniforms featuring Jada's logo.

Zip it! Stop the abuse towards referees

The Keilor Basketball Association have seen a recent spike in negative behaviour from spectators towards referees at Junior Domestic on Saturday's and quite frankly some of the behaviour is downright appalling.

Under no circumstances is anyone to approach (or heckle) referees (during or) after the game.

If you have an issue with referees you need to submit your complaint in writing to your respective Club or fill out the KBA’s online feedback form found here.

We want our children to be able to play in a safe, competitive and supportive environment. It is NEVER acceptable to verbally or physically assault another person and that includes at basketball. The Keilor Basketball Association's Participant Behaviour Policy and Basketball Victoria's Codes of Conduct clearly outline acceptable behaviour. Have a read and remember, sometimes the best thing to do when your emotions are getting the better of you is to just WALK AWAY.

Don’t be that parent! Spectators can be reported and suspended too. If you feel so passionately about refereeing feel free to sign up to the next referees course and make a difference.

We need referees to play! Please treat them with respect.

Stop the abuse, respect the game!

Time Out: The Culture of Referee Abuse | Zach Altman | TEDxSanAntonio

A brilliant piece by 19 year old basketball referee Zach Altman. This behaviour needs to stop.

“The way we currently treat referees is despicable, It’s disgusting and above all it’s disheartening. I mean where did common decency go, what are we showing our kids by role modelling abusive behavior, are we ok with teaching them authority doesn’t matter?”

Play by the rules - making sport inclusive, safe and fair

Parents play an invaluable role in club and community sports. Occasionally, however, some become over emotional, verbally abusive and sometimes even physically aggressive. It’s important that the inappropriate actions of a few parents don’t ruin the sporting experience for everyone else. Inappropriate behaviour by parents can result in children withdrawing from sport.

Tips for parents, guardians and spectators
  • Be a good role model. Children watch and learn from you, so make sure you set a good example.
  • Avoid a ‘win at all costs’ attitude. Although you may think winning is important, the focus for junior sport should be on fun.
  • Be aware that your abusive behaviour may be against the law. Ask yourself, ‘Would my mother be upset or offended by what I am saying or doing?’ If the answer is yes then it’s best to sit down and be quiet.
  • Try not to be critical of coaches, referees or umpires. Many are volunteers who give their time to make sport possible for all our children, and some are just learning.

Aberfeldie Jets Basketball Club acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land
on which we play our sport of basketball across Victoria.
We pay our respect to their ancestors and Elders, past, present and emerging.
