Coaches are the lifeblood of any junior sporting Club, volunteering their time to support children in their basketball journey and acting as role models as young people.
Coaches at Aberfeldie Jets may be mums, dads, older sisters or brothers, aunts or uncles of a player in the team, they may even be past players or members of the general community with a passion for basketball. Our Coaches are not paid for their time, nor are they NBA or NBL standard, they are just people who generously give up their time to help others grow and enjoy the sport we love.
Aberfeldie Jets requires new coaches to attend a coach induction session and complete a Basketball Australia Community Coaching course which is funded by the Club. Additional Coach development and mentoring opportunities are also available.
Coaches aged 18 years and over must hold Working with Children Checks (or recognised exemption) and be able to uphold and sign a Basketball Victoria Member Protection Statutory Declaration. Victoria Police members and teachers (who have separate checks) do not have to get a Working with Children Check however, they should provide proof that they are Victoria Police members or teachers by showing their VP accreditation or supplying the Club with a copy of their Victorian Institute of Teaching card. These exemptions are recognised by Basketball Victoria.
The Act exempts parents where their children are playing in the team in which the parent is involved as a volunteer. Also exempt are adults where all children in a team are closely related to the person. However, Basketball Victoria, the Keilor Basketball Association and Aberfeldie Jets will not recognise these exemptions and will require those parents or close relatives to hold valid Working with Children Checks. For more information on this, please download the Working With Children pamphlet from Basketball Victoria.
Being a Coach at the Aberfeldie Jets Basketball Club is a wonderful way to create relationships, develop life skills, give back to your community and for parents an opportunity to show support for their children. To express an interest in coaching please complete this form and we will be in touch.
