Play by the rules - making sport inclusive, safe and fair
Parents play an invaluable role in club and community sports. Occasionally, however, some become over emotional, verbally abusive and sometimes even physically aggressive. It’s important that the inappropriate actions of a few parents don’t ruin the sporting experience for everyone else. Inappropriate behaviour by parents can result in children withdrawing from sport.

Tips for parents, guardians and spectators
- Be a good role model. Children watch and learn from you, so make sure you set a good example.
- Avoid a ‘win at all costs’ attitude. Although you may think winning is important, the focus for junior sport should be on fun.
- Be aware that your abusive behaviour may be against the law. Ask yourself, ‘Would my mother be upset or offended by what I am saying or doing?’ If the answer is yes then it’s best to sit down and be quiet.
- Try not to be critical of coaches, referees or umpires. Many are volunteers who give their time to make sport possible for all our children, and some are just learning.
Zip it! Stop the abuse towards referees
The Keilor Basketball Association have seen a recent spike in negative behaviour from spectators towards referees at Junior Domestic on Saturday's and quite frankly some of the behaviour is downright appalling.
Under no circumstances is anyone to approach (or heckle) referees (during or) after the game. If you have an issue with referees you need to submit your complaint in writing to your respective Club or fill out the KBA’s online feedback form found here.
We want our children to be able to play in a safe, competitive and supportive environment. It is NEVER acceptable to verbally or physically assault another person and that includes at basketball. The Keilor Basketball Association's Participant Behaviour Policy and Basketball Victoria's Codes of Conduct clearly outline acceptable behaviour. Have a read and remember, sometimes the best thing to do when your emotions are getting the better of you is to just WALK AWAY.
Don’t be that parent! Spectators can be reported and suspended too. If you feel so passionately about refereeing feel free to sign up to the next referees course and make a difference.
We need referees to play! Please treat them with respect.
