As a courtesy to other teams please ensure you do not enter the gym until the allocated time and that you depart on time. The Coach is there to train the children and develop their basketball skills. Given the age of the children and the fact that they may not be comfortable being left alone, please ensure you remain at training and games to assist with supervising them. If you wish to assist with the Coaching at training or participate in the drills have a chat to the Coach, you will need to be registered with the Club and also have provided me with a copy of a valid working with children check before participating.
All families are expected to assist with scoring throughout the season, basketball scoring is really easy in comparison to other
sports. You can read more about scoring here.
Basketball is lots of fun to watch and be involved in, we do hope you enjoy being a part of it.

Training
So as not to disturb other teams already training, teams should not enter the venue before their assigned training time.
Players must not to be left unattended at the gym until the coach is present before training. And after training, all children should be collected promptly. The club bears no responsibility for children left at the gym outside their designated training hours or not in the presence of their coach or parent.
Siblings present at training times should be supervised by their parents and must not be allowed to climb on the rails in the gym, nor play on the court while teams are training. The club will not bear liability should a sibling become injured or cause material damage during training time.
Under no circumstances are unfinancial players or children not known to the Admin Officer permitted to train with Aberfeldie Jets. Coaches who allow children to train without written permission from Aberfeldie Jets will be personally liable for any injuries or material damage caused by such children.
All teams are to vacate the court promptly once their training has ended so the next team may start or if the session is the last session for the night that the venue can be secured and we keep the schools happy. We encourage all players to attend training as it is at training and not games where coaches develop team concepts and plays as well as individual player development. It is common courtesy to let the coach and/or team manager know if your child can't make it to training. No player can expect fair and even court time if their attendance at training is irregular and unpredictable.

Some junior domestic competition facts:
Further complexities:
All this has to be considered when preparing the fixture while equally trying to maintain a fair fixture. The Club unfortunately has no say in the fixtures.
Previously the KBA would consider accepting requests from Clubs for byes under extenuating circumstances in grades with an odd number of teams. As of Round 4, 2018 the KBA has advised that they are no longer in a position to cater for such requests. Therefore the Club will no longer be requesting byes and teams will need to decide between playing with fill in players if they can be arranged or giving a walkover if they are unable to field a team for any reason. This is unfortunately beyond the Clubs control.
Some junior domestic competition facts:
- 49 competitions
- 436 teams
- Approx 3600 players
- Approx 180 games played each week (20 teams have a bye)
Further complexities:
- roughly 30% of these teams have an adult coach that coaches multiple teams (known as a coaches conflict)
- then there's the coaches aged under 19 who play and coach
- and the referees or various ages who referee and play and/referee or coach
- there's limited resources (both venues and referees)
- and challenges with venue non availability throughout the season (such as St Bernard's during exams)
- some competitions (three) do not have a time slot at Keilor Stadium. Attempts are made to give them one every now and again.
- competitions that do have a time slot at Keilor stadium sometimes lose them when coaches conflicts are fixtured
All this has to be considered when preparing the fixture while equally trying to maintain a fair fixture. The Club unfortunately has no say in the fixtures.

For families new to the Club, what happens with teams for next season…
For families new to the Club, there’s no need to add your child back on the waitlist to secure them a spot for next season, the waitlist is purely for kids not already playing or have taken the season off and want to get back into a team.
Here’s what happens in preparation for the next season:
For families new to the Club, there’s no need to add your child back on the waitlist to secure them a spot for next season, the waitlist is purely for kids not already playing or have taken the season off and want to get back into a team.
Here’s what happens in preparation for the next season:
- Towards the middle of this season your coach/TM will receive an email from the Registrar asking them to check with existing players to see if they’re returning for next season
- Coach/TM contacts parents in their team to confirm players will be returning. Most of our players return to play on, although some pull out due to other activities (music, other sports, too much school work, moving houses etc)
- The coach/TM responds to the Registrars to let them know who is in for next season and who is out
- The Registrar reviews responses and identifies vacancies in teams. Winter 2019 is not an age change season so age groups will remain the same
- The registrar looks to back fill any vacancies in existing teams with children off the waitlist or if waitlist is exhausted some teams may be merged to keep them viable.
Post grading grade changes
Round 4 sees a number of teams move grades across the competition and all of the ladders reset. Players will receive qualifications for the games they've played during the grading rounds but all the results will be wiped and the competition starts a fresh from Round 4.
Coaches were afforded the opportunity to provide feedback on their teams grading by emailing their respective registrars by 7pm on Saturday 27 October. The registrars (girls outgoing Jodee Gregory, girls incoming Visjna Pravica and boys Lisa Bromley) reviewed coach feedback, along with previous season ladder results, grading round results and current rep player information to determine where teams should be placed this coming Summer 2018-19 Season. The registrars then had to present their case for each team who was identified to move on a grade by grade basis at the Keilor Basketball Association Junior Domestic Committee grading meeting on Monday 29th October 2018. As is typical for a grading meeting the Club was successful in getting some teams moved but not others. The KBA also moved some teams based on rep player numbers.
The KBA has advised that they will not consider any further requests for regrading or movements of teams this season. Any queries regarding your final grades should be directed to your respective registrars at [email protected] or [email protected]
A full list of teams that have been regraded can be found below. Team numbers haven’t changed however some grade names have (some have been renamed and some are a result of teams being moved up/down).
Reminder that byes and games against teams played in grading may occur again to teams in first few rounds. This is not intentional but may occur as fixtures are redone.

Scoring duties
Don't forget that any player who doesn't play needs to be crossed off the score sheet each game.
If at any stage throughout the season you need to hand write a player’s name on the sheet, the Club need's to know about it please. Players not printed on the scoresheet have either fallen off the system and need to be re-added or aren’t known to the Club as playing in the team.
If you are playing a new player, they must be registered on the back of the sheet before they take the court and you must email [email protected] to advise you have played them.
You can find more information on how to score here on our website.

Green shirt referees
Please be aware of the following regarding green shirt referees:
Please be aware of the following regarding green shirt referees:
- Speaking to the green shirt referee is not permitted (if they are the only referee on the game and the Coach has an issue the Coach needs to speak to the door person who may then speak to the green shirt on their behalf)
- Coaches are only permitted to speak to the senior referee (in the black and white stripes) during the game
- Coaches, speak to your parents and supporters and encourage them to only cheer and support the team. Hearing negative feedback from the crowd is the number one deterrent for referees
- Coaches and players should shake the apprentices hand after the games and give positive reinforcement about their job. Even if it is only 'Thanks for the game,' this statement speaks volumes to referees and will help build confidence, a rapport with you as a coach and ensure they, like you are also enjoying the game of basketball.

Basketball Coaches wanted for boys and girls teams – can you help our players grow at the grass roots level of domestic basketball?
Are you thinking about coaching your child's team or know someone who might be interested? Aberfeldie Jets Registrars are already busy behind the scenes looking at teams for the Winter Season starting in Term 2 season and we’ve identified we need more coaches. Some coaches won’t continue due to other commitments so we will need to replace them, additionally we will also be looking to create a few new teams in the younger age groups comprising of children from our Junior Jets clinics and wait list. Without coaches we can't get kids playing.
If you have a passion for helping teach basketball, enjoy working with kids and want to help our game continue to grow then volunteer to coach a team! Coaching is the lifeblood of any sporting club. Without people willing to give up their time to invest in helping young players and role modelling for young people, clubs don’t succeed. Just as the quality of a school teacher determines the success and future of their students, so to do coaches for basketball clubs. Aberfeldie Jets are happy to provide assistance and education, which includes a Coach induction session and support as needed from our Coaching Director. We also reimburse Coaches who attend Basketball Australia accredited coaching courses.
Aberfeldie Jets teams train one hour per week (teams are scheduled a regular one hour session Monday to Thursday between 4:00pm to 9:30pm depending on Coach and court availability) and play on Saturday’s in the Keilor Basketball Association Junior Domestic competition.
We are a welcoming and friendly club who have recently celebrated our 40 year anniversary, we want to see kids develop confidence, make friends and participate in the sport we love! Your involvement can help foster good sportsmanship, stronger, healthier, happier and safer community, enabling many children to be active.
We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. We abide by the Basketball Victoria Member Protection Bylaws which outline the screening process for people in our Club who volunteer (committee members, coaches and team managers). In accepting a volunteer role, you are agreeing to supply a current WWCC (unless you are underage, recognised as a teacher or in the police force) and must complete a member protection statutory declaration.

The process of registering for the wait list
Simply complete your details via the form below and one of the Club's registrars will contact you when a new team is being formed or a position in an existing team becomes available.
It is not possible to place a new player into a team immediately on most occasions as the season may have already commenced or is almost concluded or the team lists for that particular age group and/or grade are already full. In these circumstances, players will be placed on a wait list for a position in a team in the next season. Players from the wait list are then placed into suitable teams as vacancies become available or when there are sufficient children on the wait list to form a new team.
The Club is always looking for Coaches to coach new teams, if you are able to coach please let us know when registering your child for the wait list. We love positive parental involvement!
The Club cannot advise exactly when your child's/children's training might be. If you know they cannot train on a particular night, please include this information in the comments section on the registration form.

The importance of positive parental involvement
Children's sport provides a fantastic opportunity for you as a parent/guardian to spend time with your child/children. Whether you help out by coaching, being a team manager, being a great sideline cheerleader, or organizing half time snacks, the entire experience can be a positive one for your family instead of just another item on your weekly “to do” list. The Club encourages positive parental involvement and welcomes nominations for Coaches or Team Managers for those new to the Club.
Many hands make light work and all families are expected to assist with scoring throughout the season. The person fulfilling the role of scorer is considered an official of the game and as such is expected to display the following behaviour:
Parents and spectators should:
All parents and players are expected to familiarise themselves and abide by the Aberfeldie Jets registration terms and conditions available on our information and policies page found here.
Please familiarise yourself with the Codes of Conduct below and ensure adherence to them at all times, ignorance is not an excuse. Parents and spectators can also be reported for breaching the Codes of Conduct.

Parents and spectators should:
- Be a good role model. Children watch and learn from you, so make sure you set a good example. Only make encouraging comments towards players
- Be aware that your abusive behaviour may be against the law. Ask yourself, ‘Would my mother be upset or offended by what I am saying or doing?’ If the answer is yes then it’s best to sit down and be quiet
- Try not to be critical of coaches, referees or umpires. Many are volunteers who give their time to make sport possible for all our children, and some are just learning.
- Refrain from making comments about players mistakes or errors
- Allow the coach to coach, refrain from coaching or directing their child or other players during all games and practices unless asked to help out
- Avoid providing excuses for a poor result e.g. the referees, the coaches or other factors
- Avoid a ‘win at all costs’ attitude. Although you may think winning is important, the focus for junior sport should be on fun.
